Boxers Lose on Senior Day to Puget Sound, 76-67

The Pacific University women's basketball team dropped a 76-67 Senior Day decision to nationally-ranked Puget Sound on Saturday.

The Boxers (8-17, 6-10 NWC) were led by senior All-American candidate Sarah Curl (Portland, Ore.), who had 28 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to close out her career. Curl finished the season with her seventh double double of the season. Fellow senior Nikki Gilbert (East Wenatchee, Wash.) hit five 3-pointers en route to 19 points in her final game.

The Loggers (24-1, 16-0 NWC), who are ranked as high as No. 7 in the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll, had four scorers in double figures including Jamie Lange, who had 18 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. She was joined by Elizabeth Prewitt, who added 22; Samone Jackson and Caitlin Malvar had 15 and 10 points, respectively.

With 2:25 to play and the score tied at 65, Puget Sound scored the next 11 game to spoil Senior Day and the upset-minded Boxers chances. Loggers' senior Alexa Noren converted a 3-point play with 2:07 to go to spark the decisive run.

On three occasions, Pacific withstood a 13-point deficit to eventually take a two-point lead on a pair of occasions in the final quarter. Boxers' senior Karli McHone (Glenns Ferry, Idaho) made a pair of free throws with 5:05 left put Pacific ahead 58-56.

A pair of free throws by Noren and a 3-pointer by Jackson put the visitors back in front, 61-58 with 4:10 to go. The contest went back and forth until the 3-point play by Noren sparked the visitors in the closing minutes.

The game marked the final game for seven Pacific seniors – Curl, Gilbert, McHone as well as Sarah Alanis (Riverside, Calif.), Jordan Oster (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Jillian Ross (St. Helens, Ore.) and Delaney Emerson (Portland, Ore.), who all saw action.
