No. 22 Lutes Rally to Defeat Boxers, 5-4

No. 22 Pacific Lutheran scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over Pacific University on Saturday in Tacoma.

The Boxers fall to 8-8 overall and 3-7 in the Northwest Conference; whereas the Lutes improve to 10-3 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Pacific designated hitter Joey Galeno (Auburn, Wash.) had a team-high three hits – all doubles. Starting pitcher Paul Wolfram (Las Vegas, Nev.) allowed eight hits and three runs (all earned). In relief, Cole Kanazawa (Honolulu, Hawaii) pitched 2.1 innings, where he allowed a hit and two runs (both earned) in the loss. Matt Jensen (Montesano, Wash.) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowed just a hit and striking out three.

PLU relievers Andrew Curran and Tanner Williams combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings, scattering just three hits and striking out five. Curran picked up the win to improve to 2-0 and Williams recorded his second save. The Lutes' Kory VanderStaay and Anthony Gosline each had three hits to lead a 10-hit attack.

Pacific rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead on the strength of a three-run sixth inning before the Lutes came back to plate a pair in the come-from-behind win.

Trailing 3-0, three-straight one out doubles by the Boxers put the visitors ahead for the first time on the afternoon. One of the doubles was a two-RBI double for senior Kurtis Kloke (San Bernardino, Calif.), scoring Eli Wisdom (La Grande, Ore.) and Galeno. To start the inning, Wisdom had reached on an error. Pacific went ahead when Dylan Wright (Gilbert, Ariz.) hit the third double of the inning, scoring Kloke from second.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
