The Pacific University baseball team dropped a twinbill to Puget Sound, 5-4 (game 1) and 3-0 (game 2) on Sunday in Forest Park.
The Boxers (9-12, 4-11 NWC), who were playing in their first 'home' games of the season, surrendered a run in the seventh in game one and three in the first in game two.
The Loggers (8-10, 4-5 NWC) withstood a late Pacific rally for the game one victory and three pitchers combined on an eight-hit shutout in the nightcap.
Game 1
In game one, Pacific came back twice from a pair of two-run deficit to tie the game. The Boxers had eight hits in the loss with sophomore catcher
Brandon Henderson (Pearl City, Hawaii) having a team-high two hits.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the fourth, senior outfielder
Kurtis Kloke (San Bernardino, Calif.) hit a solo home run and
Dustin Meyer (Silverton, Ore.) picked up a RBI single to tie the game at 2. Puget Sound went back ahead with a two-RBI single in its half of the sixth before the Boxers tied it in its half of the inning.
In its half of the sixth, with the bases loaded,
Eli Wisdom (La Grande, Ore.) to cut the deficit to 4-3. The next batter,
Charlie Dietrich (Aberdeen, Wash.) was hit by a pitch, scoring Meyer to even the contest at 4. Next, with one out,
Joey Galeno (Auburn, Wash.) hit a fly ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly but the Loggers' center fielder made a throw to get the Boxers' runner at third before the run closed the plate to end the rally.
Back-to-back hits including a wild pitch put Puget Sound back in front by a 5-4 margin in the seventh. The Boxers mounted a comeback attempt in its half of the eighth.
Josh Keithly (Mission Viejo, Calif.) reached on an error to start the inning. Then after a Boxers' fielder's choice, the Loggers' closer Michael Warnick got a double play to keep Pacific off the scoreboard.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Puget Sound scored three times in the first inning which proved to be enough en route to a 3-0 win. The Boxers stranded a pair of base runners in both the first and seventh innings, respectively.
Three Pacific pitchers including starter
Brady O'Keefe (Tacoma, Wash.) limited Puget Sound to eight hits in the defeat. O'Keefe, who pitched 5.2 innings, scattering seven hits, three runs (three earned) and struck out two in the loss. Eight-different Boxers had a hit in the loss.
Puget Sound was led by Mason Quinlan, who had two of the eight hits and one of the three runs in the win. Relievers Joe Brennan and Michael Warnick pitched the final 6.2 innings after starter Tyler Huling left with an injury in the third. Brennan held the Boxers to just four hits and struck out six in the win to improve to 1-1 and Warnick picked up his second save of the day and his sixth of the season after a scoreless ninth.
Next, Pacific will travel to Portland to face Lewis & Clark for a three-game series. The series is scheduled to start with a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 25 at noon
