Whitworth scored in seven of eight innings including the last four en route to an 11-4 win over the Pacific University baseball team on Saturday in Spokane.
The Pirates (22-13, 12-12 NWC) scored seven of its 11 runs in the final four to complete the series sweep. Designated hitter Tyler Bailey had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI to lead a Whitworth attack that had 11 hits in the win. Out of the bullpen, Matthew Pulliam pitched the final five innings, allowing four hits, two runs – both earned and striking out one to pick up the win to improve to 2-0.
The Boxers (13-21, 7-17 NWC) had 10 hits including a pair by
Eli Wisdom (pictured) (La Grande, Ore.), who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and
Luke Peevyhouse (Phoenix, Ariz.), respectively. Starting pitcher
Brady O'Keefe (Tacoma, Wash.) went four innings, scattering eight hits in the loss to fall to 2-6.
Whitworth built an early 4-0 lead, scoring three times in the first inning and another run in the third. The Boxers got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fourth inning. A bases loaded walk to
Taren Bradd (Medford, Ore.) and a RBI single by Wisdom accounted for the two runs. The Pirates scored two more times in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2 before Pacific came back with two in the sixth. With two out, Peevyhouse and Bradd reached on back-to-back singles; then a double by Wisdom brought in a pair of runs to make it a two-run contest, 6-4. The Pirates added to its lead with a run each in the sixth and eighth and three more in the seventh for the final margin.
Pacific will be back in action in nearly two weeks when they host Linfield and Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Apr. 29. Between matchups, Linfield and Pacific Lutheran will play one another in a 2 p.m. contest. Also, on that day, the Boxers will honor its graduating seniors.
