FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Sophomore
Robert Nurmi's second goal of the season earned Pacific a 1-0 victory ove UC Santa Cruz at Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium.
Nurmi (Gig Harbor, Wash.) struck in the 10th minute, when a ball from junior
Keilian MacCulloch (Williamstown, Ontario, Canada) found the feet of junior
Shawn Opfer (Elk Grove, Calif.), who sent a ball over the top to lead Nurmi toward the top of the 18-yard box. Nurmi ran onto Opfer's ball and ripped a shot from 20 yards to give Pacific (2-1-0) the one-goal advantage.
Pacific controlled the possession for much of the game, despite a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots over UC Santa Cruz (0-3-0).
Boxers' senior goalkeeper
Leyton Thommasen (Des Moines, Wash.) was outstanding in goal, recording four saves on the night. Thommasen recorded a highlight save in the 22nd minute when he dove to his right and in full extension took away a potential goal in the upper-90 from the Banana Slugs.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN... Thommasen secured the clean sheet with a late save in the 86th minute on a shot from UC Santa Cruz's Jacob Myers Norys.
STAT OF THE GAME... Friday's clean sheet was the 17th of Thommasen's career.
