Boxers Drop Conference Opener to Whitman

The Pacific University women's basketball team landed three players in double figures in an 84-69 loss to host Whitman on Friday night to begin Northwest Conference play.

The Boxers (2-3, 0-1 NWC) were led by the 23-point effort from Courtney Carolan, who is the reigning Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week, making four 3-pointers to go along with three steals in the loss. She was joined in double digits by a 19-point effort from Liana Tanaka and 12 more from Charli Elliott.

The Blues (4-2, 1-0 NWC) shot 47% from the field with a game-high 24 points from Kaylie McCracken, who went 5-for-5 from the 3-point line to lead host Whitman. She was joined in double figures by Mady Burdett, who added 20 on four 3-pointers and Maegen Martin, who chipped in 13.

Whitman opened the game with a 3-point play by Martin that put the Blues on the scoreboard and ahead for the remainder of the contest. An 8-0 run to end the opening half, cut the deficit to four, 42-38 at halftime.

Twice, in the third quarter, the Boxers lowered the Blues lead to two points including at 47-45 when Carolan hit a 3-pointer with 6:35 left in the 3rd quarter. Whitman answered the spurt with a 12-2 run that pushed lead for the host Blues to double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Next, Pacific will wrap up its opening weekend of Northwest Conference play with a matchup against Whitworth at 4 p.m. For the Boxers' head coach Alecia Wilson, it will serve as a homecoming where she served as the Pirates' assistant coach for the last four years.
