Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Luke Olson, Sports Information Assistant

Boxers Just Fall Short in Potential Upset

After a couple of free throws made by Haylee Hutzler to take a 60-59 lead, the Pacific University women's basketball team were down just one with 3.5 seconds left with just a bucket away to take down No. 20 George Fox University Bruins.

A timeout by the coaching staff would give the Boxers one final play of the season with the game on the line. Junior Liana Tanaka (Kahului, Hawaii) would inbound the ball with seconds left, drive to the basket with the ball just rimming out of the basket and the Boxers would fall short with a final score of 60-59 on Saturday afternoon.

It was an all-around team effort from the Boxers with three players in double figures. Junior Jenee Brown (Kailua, Hawaii) would have a team leading 13 points, making five of six shots from the field including a pair of 3-pointers. Tanaka would add 12 points for her team along with junior Charli Elliott (West Seattle) adding 11 points.

The Boxers (5-19, 4-12 NWC) would hold the Bruins to 34.5% (20-59) from the field on the night and in the 4th quarter alone, they held them to 23.1%. The Boxers would out rebound their opponent 40-33 with 30 coming from the defensive side. The team would also secure nine steals.

The Bruins (22-3, 15-1 NWC), who on Friday secured the Northwest Conference title outright, were led by Haylee Hutzler, who added 12 points and Kaitlin Jamieson would grab a game-high eight rebounds.

After a slow start to the game and tied at 6, the Bruins would go on an 11-3 run to take a 17-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes. But, a 7-1 run for the Boxers to start the second quarter would keep the score within one. George Fox managed to stretch the lead to as much as nine before the Boxers would end the opening half with a 14-2 run for a 31-28 halftime lead.

Midway through the final quarter, the Boxers would go on an 8-0 run to even the score at 55 with 3:19 left. After a field goal by Emily Spencer for the Bruins, the Boxers' Jenee' Brown would follow up with a three pointer to put Pacific ahead 58-57 lead with 1:58 left.

After one of two free throws hit by each team, the Boxers would hold a 59-58 lead with Spencer on the line with seven second left. Spencer would miss both, but a foul by Pacific after the second attempt sent Hutzler to the line for what proved to be the difference.

The contest ends the 2017-18 season for the Boxers.
