East Texas Baptist Edges Pacific, 5-4

A costly Pacific error in the bottom of the ninth led East Texas Baptist past the Boxers, 5-4 on Saturday in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Boxers (0-2) had rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game at 4 with a run each in the seventh and eighth. Six-different players for Pacific had a hit and senior Cole Kanazawa was the tough-luck loser. Kanazawa pitched the final 3.2 innings in relief of starter Sam Lawrence, allowing just two hits and striking out two.

The Tigers (1-1) also had six hits in the win and John Marrs pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits, a run (earned) and striking out three in the win.

With the game tied at 4 in the bottom of the ninth, with one out, back-to-back Tigers walked to put runners on first and second. On the first pitch to KJ Miller, who hit it sharply to the Boxers' shortstop, who misplayed the ball to allow a hustling Jonathon Sylvester from second to score the game-winning run.

ETBU scored twice in the second inning for an early 2-0 lead before the Boxers came back with two of its own in the third to tie the game. The Boxers tied the game on just one hit, capitalizing on a pair of errors by the Tigers.

East Texas Baptist regained the lead in the fifth, scoring twice on two hits for a 4-2 lead. The Boxers cut into the Tigers lead when Derek Legeza doubled with one out to score Max Nealon, who had led off the inning with a walk, in the seventh. The Boxers managed to tie the game at 4 in the eighth on a bases loaded walk to Nealon.

Weather in the Shreveport area forced the Boxers' game against No. 20 Centenary to be rescheduled to Sunday at 10 a.m. (CST); 8 a.m. (PST). The Boxers will end its trip to Shreveport with a 4 p.m. (CST) and 2 p.m. (PST) rematch against the Tigers.
