Boxers Rally for Win in Home Opener

A two-run seventh and a single run in the eighth broke a 7-7 tie for the Pacific University baseball team, who rallied to edge Pacific Lutheran, 10-7 on Friday night in Forest Grove.

The Boxers (1-4) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 7 with a solid complement of hitting and the shutdown pitching effort of senior Cole Kanazawa made winners of Pacific in its home opener.

Pacific had 12 hits in the win including Derek Legeza, Dylan Wright, Eli Wisdom and Von Ferguson leading the attack with two hits apiece. Ferguson drove in four runs including two in the seventh and another in the eighth to lead the offense.

Kanazawa became the fifth pitcher for the Boxers on the night when he entered the game to start the seventh inning. The Honolulu native allowed just two hits and struck out five Lutes en route to the win.

The Lutes (1-4) also had 12 hits in the contest including three from Cole Johnson, who had three RBI and two runs scored. Reliever Andrew Curran pitched the final 3.2 innings, scattering six hits, three runs (one earned) and struck out seven in the loss.

After a single, a Boxer error and hit by pitch filled the bases against Kanzawa, who got out of the jam with a fielder's choice in the top of the seventh.

The Boxers started its comeback in the half of the seventh when Joey Galeno was hit by a pitch and a costly error on a fly ball hit by Derek Ridgway put runners on second and third for Ferguson to start the inning. The senior ripped a single up the middle, plating Galeno and Ridgway to put Pacific in front 9-7. An RBI single by Ferguson gave the Boxers an insurance run in the eighth.

Kanazawa closed the door on the win with back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth.
