Boxers Outlast Bearcats in 5-4 Win

A three-run first inning including a two-RBI effort by freshman Aaron Alexander led visiting Pacific University baseball team to a 5-3 win over Willamette.

The Boxers (12-15) had three players – Joey Galeno, Derek Ridgway and Dustin Meyer – with two hits in the win. Pacific had 11 hits for double-digit hits for the third time in the last four games, who extends its winning streak to four games.

Alexander had two of the five RBI for Pacific in the win. Pacific used five-different pitchers in the win including starter Bryce Wlodarchak, who picked up the win.

The Bearcats (15-13) – who had won two of the three in a weekend series earlier this year – were led by Joseph Faudskar, who had two of the four hits and Eric Del Prado had two of the four RBI.

Legeza led off the game with a single down the right-field line. Then, with one out, Galeno singled down the left-field line to put runners on the corners for Ridgway. Pacific plated its first run when Ridgway continued the trend of hits just inside the base line. He ripped a double down the right-field line for the early 1-0 advantage.

The Boxers added to its lead when Alexander hit a ball into the gap in right-center field to score Galeno and Ridgway to stretch the lead to 3-0. However, Alexander missed first on the play and was ruled out after an appeal.

Willamette got on the board in the bottom of the first with just one hit, cutting the Pacific lead to 3-1. Then, the Boxers added to its lead when Galeno hit a RBI double to score Meyer from first, who walked to lead off the fifth inning.  The Bearcats got the run back in its half of the inning.

A Dylan Wright RBI double scored Dustin Meyer, who had reached on a one out bunt in the inning. Meyer scored two of the five runs for Pacific in the win. It is the third-consecutive game that Dustin Meyer has scored a run for the Boxers. A chance by the Bearcats to cut into the lead was erased when Ridgway turned an unassisted double play on a line drive to end the seventh.

With a 5-3 lead, a solo home run by the Bearcats cut the deficit to two in the eighth inning. The Bearcats managed to load the bases in the ninth on just one hit. A sacrifice fly made it a one-run game before Jensen got a fly out to end the game.

Next, the Boxers will next face Linfield in a three-game series in McMinnville. The action starts with a doubleheader on Friday, March 30 at noon.
