Boxers Take Two from Lewis & Clark

Haley Kodama had four hits – including two doubles – and four RBI to go along with solid pitching by starters Alyssa Burns and Ashley Martin as the Pacific University softball team swept a doubleheader from Lewis & Clark, 3-0 and 7-0 on Friday in Forest Grove.

Pacific (17-9, 11-7 NWC) recorded back-to-back shutouts in a doubleheader for the first time since March 25, 2015 when they blanked Northwest Christian in back-to-back games.

Burns started the day, scattering six hits and striking out three in the game one win. Martin followed that up, allowing just two hits and a walk for the game two win.

The Boxers scored all of its runs in game one in the fourth inning. Kodama tripled with one out to right center. Then, Montana Vaught laid down a bunt and an aggressive Kodama slid under the tag for a RBI single. Kaitlynn Donaca followed that bunt with one of her own, catching the Pioneers off guard to put runners on first and second. A third-straight sacrifice was laid down by the Boxers that moved Vaught and Donaca to second and third, respectively.

Then, Nicole Martinez had an infield RBI single to score Vaught from third to put runners on the corners for pinch hitter Kiana Kushiyama, Next, Pacific attempted a double steal with Martinez and Donaca. An errant throw down to second went into the outfield, allowing Donaca to score from third.

The Pioneers (6-16, 5-13 NWC) stranded 11 base runners including two in four-different innings in the loss.

In the nightcap, Pacific scored three runs in the second and sixth innings and another run in the third en route to the 7-0 win.

Kodama and Jill Uyeda each had three hits and Kaitlynn Donaca added two more as Pacific had 12 hits in the win. Martin retired the final seven batters in order to raise her record to 6-3. It is the first shutout of the season and fourth of her career for Martin.

After stranding a pair of base runners in the first, Pacific scored three in the second. Two of the three came in on a two-out, two-RBI double to left field by Kodama for the early lead. A RBI single by Uyeda in the third stretched the lead to 4-0.

The Boxers added to their lead, scoring three more times in the sixth. Pacific loaded the bases to start the inning with back-to-back singles and a hit by pitch. Then, Martinez picked up another RBI on a ground out. Kodama drove in two more on a double, scoring Kushiyama and Donaca. With two out, Haley Miller ripped a single up the middle but Kodama was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

Pacific, who has won six of its last seven, will wrap up the weekend series with another doubleheader on Saturday against the Pioneers at noon at Sherman-Larkins Stadium.
