The Pacific University men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to #31 Lewis & Clark on Saturday in Portland.
The Boxers (9-5, 5-2 NWC) started the match, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for an early 2-1 lead against the nationally-ranked Pioneers. The win by the No. 2 doubles team of
Jonathan Chung and
Sage Katayama raised their record to a team-best 9-1 on the season.
Lewis & Clark (11-5, 7-1 NWC) rallied for the win with four-consecutive wins in singles to clinch the match. One of the wins came in a matchup of regionally-ranked players at No. 1 singles. The Boxers'
Oscar Wight, who entered the match at No. 24 in the ITA West Region rankings, dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10-1) win over Jackson Powell, who is No. 11.
Despite a 6-2 deficit, the Boxers got its final win on the day at No. 5 singles in one of the more exciting matches of the day when
Sean Murphy for Pacific outlasted Brenden Burrows for Lewis & Clark. Murphy took the first set by a 7-6 margin before Burrows extended the match to a third set, winning the second set by a 6-4 margin. The third set was decided in a third-set tiebreaker with Murphy coming out on top by a 14-12 margin.
Next, Pacific will host George Fox on Sunday for Senior Day as
Sage Katayama and Wight will be recognized in pre-match ceremonies at the Holce Tennis Courts.
