Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

All-Around Team Effort Leads Pacific to 116-83 Road Win Over PLU

The Pacific University men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak and a five-game winless streak against Northwest Conference teams in a 116-83 win over host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.

The Boxers (7-8 overall, 1-5 Northwest Conference) led for nearly the entire contest and landed three players in double figures, including a 27-point effort from Gage Shelmidine and Marcus Wallace and Davis Holly each had 23. The last time that Pacific had three players with at least 20 points was when Ross Bartlett (32 points), Donnie Harrison-Davis (23 points) and Kyle Motta (20 points) did so against the Lutes on Feb. 17, 2007.

The Lutes (6-8, 3-3 Northwest Conference) were able to land five players in double figures in the defeat. Nasseen Guiterrez-Orozco led Pacific Lutheran with 14 points), Jordan Thomas added 13, Kelton Williams chipped in 12, Carlton Brown and Zac Webb had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Boxer defense came away with its first steal to set up a 3-pointer by Holly for its first points of the afternoon. Over the next seven minutes, it was a complete team effort as Pacific raced out to a 22-5 advantage with 13:13 left in the opening half. The Boxers went into the halftime break with a 65-37 lead, shooting at a 41.4% (24-for-58) clip including 14 3-pointers and 14-for-16 from the free-throw line. With 65 points at the intermission, it marked the fourth time that Pacific had reached 65 points in the opening 20 minutes.

The Boxers continued to flex its offensive muscle in the final 20 minutes, finishing the game with 13-different players scoring in the win and eclipsing the 100-point mark for the eighth time on the season. Pacific managed to build a lead as large as 35 in the second half. Not to be lost in the offensive numbers is the defensive effort that saw the Boxers force the Lutes into a season-high 33 turnovers and come away with 13 steals.

Next, Pacific will remain on the road to face Linfield on Friday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. in McMinnville.
