Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shelmidine Scores 31 in Boxers' 111-105 Loss to George Fox

Gage Shelmidine scored a season-high and game-high 31 points to lead five Boxers in double figures as the Pacific University men's basketball team dropped a 111-105 decision to visiting George Fox on Friday night at the Stoller Center.

The Boxers (12-8, 6-5) trailed for nearly the entire contest and were within five with 1:02 left in the contest when Marcus Wallace drove in for an uncontested layup. The Bruins withstood the late rally led by Shelmidine, who scored 11 of the final 13 points for Pacific.

Wallace finished the contest with 20, John Rigatti had his first double double (17 points, 10 rebounds), Davis Holly added 13 and Jared Cattell chipped in 11.

The Bruins (12-8, 6-5 NWC) won in Forest Grove for just the second time in five years. All five starters and reserve Levi Dalzell were in double figures for George Fox. Mason Green-Richards led the visitors with 22 points, who scored 68 of their 111 in the paint and were 25 of 28 from the free-throw line in the win. Starters Ryan Lacey (19 points), Wesley Reynolds (18 points), Dylan Hamlett (15 points), Jackson Januik (11 points) joined Green-Richards and Dalzell, who had 12 points in double figures.

There were four lead changes in the first three minutes of the game before the Bruins went on a 12-3 spurt to take the lead for the remainder of the contest. George Fox built a lead as large as 19 in the opening half, going into halftime with a 53-41 lead. 46 of the 53 points in the first 20 minutes for the visitors came from inside the paint.

Down 20, 69-49 with 15:20 left in the second half, a 16-3 run by the Boxers cut the deficit to seven when Shelmidine converted a 3-point play. Again, the Bruins had an answer with seven unanswered points to push the lead back to double digits and as high as 19 on a pair of occasions.

There remained a lot of fight in the Boxer lineup despite the large deficit. Later in the half, Pacific outscored George Fox, 26 to 12 to cut the deficit to five. The Bruins' Green-Richards hit a 3-pointer on the next possession to make it a three-possession game with :38 left to play.

Next, Pacific will travel to Puget Sound on Saturday at 6 p.m. Earlier this season, the Boxers dropped a 101-93 decision to the Loggers on January 4 in Forest Grove.
