A 12-1 run to start the game was just enough to lead No. 14 George Fox past the Pacific University women's basketball team en route to a 70-57 win on Friday night at the Stoller Center.
The Boxers (7-13, 1-10 NWC) found themselves behind 11 to start the contest and six after the first 10 minutes. Much like the rest of the season, there was still a lot of fight on the Pacific roster as the Boxers were outscored by a combined seven points over the next three quarters. Despite the loss, four players for Pacific scored in double figures including sophomore
Courtney Carolan, who scored a team-high 15 in the loss. Three of her teammates scored 11, including
Liana Tanaka,
Ashley Jones and Jeneé Brown.
The Bruins (17-3, 10-1 NWC) were led by a 17-point effort from Emily Holder, who had 10 of the points in the final 20 minutes. Tavin Headings came off the bench to add 15 for George Fox.
Both teams struggled in the opening 10 minutes, Pacific shot just 16.7% (2-for-12) and the Bruins shot 23.8% (5-for-21). Despite the poor shooting, George Fox started the game on a 12-1 run. The Boxers ended the quarter on a 5-0 and scored the first seven points of the second quarter for its only lead of the night at 13-12 with 6:41 left to play. The Bruins answered the run by the Boxers, scoring the next seven for a lead that they held the remainder of the contest. Twice in the second quarter, the Boxers rallied to cut the deficit to a single point and each time, George Fox had an answer. The Bruins ended the half on a 9-2 run for a 31-23 lead at the halftime break.
The two teams enjoyed a hot shooting third quarter as the Bruins made 77.8% (7 of 9 shots) and the Boxers hit 70% (7-for-10), including four 3-pointers. Heading into the final 10 minutes, the Boxers found themselves behind 10, 49-39. The Bruins scored 10 of the first 13 points to end the comeback hopes for the Boxers. Pacific managed to cut the deficit to 12 in the fourth quarter. The Bruins sealed the win, making its last five free throws in the win.
Next, Pacific will take to the road to face Puget Sound on Saturday at 4 p.m. Earlier this season, the Boxers dropped a 63-61 decision to the Loggers on January 4, 2019 in Forest Grove.
