Boxers and Bruins Split Doubleheader for Second-Straight Day

For the second-straight day, the Pacific University softball team split a doubleheader with host George Fox in Newberg on Sunday.

The Boxers (19-8, 13-3 NWC) started the day, dropping a 3-2 decision in game one. Pacific led from start to finish en route to an 8-0 win over the Bruins (15-10, 7-7 NWC)

"We are just taking the season, one day at a time," said Pacific head coach Liz Yandall. "I am proud of this team and excited to see where we go from here."

Pacific started the day, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Montana Vaught, who brought in Nicole Martinez, who led off the game reaching base on an error.

George Fox tied it in the second inning and took the lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Kimi Ito.

Pacific mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh inning. A pair of singles by Morgan Masters and Kiana Kushiyama put runners on first and second for Martinez. The sophomore got the Boxers within one on a RBI single; then, Kaitlynn Donaca was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  The Bruins ended the game with a pop out to claim the victory.

Martinez had two of the eight hits and one of the two RBI in the loss for Pacific. Alyssa Gonzalez and Claire Fountain each had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack for the Bruins.

The nightcap was entirely all Boxers at the plate and in the circle. Pacific pounded out 12 hits en route to an 8-0 win, including three hits each from Katelyn Macatis-Smith and Kaitlynn Donaca. Plus, Macatis-Smith had four RBI and two more for Montana Vaught. All the offense gave plenty of support to sophomore pitcher Tiare Guerrero, who limited the Bruins to five hits to raise her record to 5-2 in the shutout.

A three run – two of which came in on a RBI single by Macatis-Smith - first inning set the tone for the nightcap. The Boxers added a run in the third inning before scoring four in the fourth inning. In the fourth, the Boxers got a two-run home run by Montana Vaught including a RBI double each from Kaitlynn Donaca and Katelyn Macatis-Smith.

Next, the Boxers will travel to Portland to face Lewis & Clark for a four-game series. The series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
