Whitworth managed to score a run in the bottom of the seventh in game one and another run in the bottom of the eighth in game two to sweep a doubleheader against the Pacific University softball team on Saturday.
The Pirates, who improve to 27-9 overall and 21-5 in the Northwest Conference, picked up a 2-1 win in game one and a 5-4 win in game two over the Boxers, who fall to 23-16 overall and 17-11 in the Northwest Conference.
Game one found the Boxers taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning before the host Pirates came back with a run in the fourth and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Pacific was limited to three hits –
Nicole Martinez,
Jill Uyeda and Katelyn Macatis-Smith – in game one by the Pirates' starting pitcher Drea Schwaier-Wolf.
The Boxers got on the board when
Jill Uyeda tripled to right field with one out. Then, an infield RBI single by Macatis-Smith put the visitors ahead by a 1-0 margin and the first time on the weekend.
Whitworth managed to tie it in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Michelle Silva, scoring Kinsey McNaught from second, who had doubled earlier in the inning. The Pirates managed to plate the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh.
In the circle, Pacific starter
Morgan Masters pitched 5.2 innings, scattering five hits in a no decision.
Tiare Guerrero pitched the final inning, allowing two hits and unearned run in the loss to fall to 5-3. Schwaier-Wolf struck out two in the win to raise her record to 15-3.
Game two saw the Boxers down 4-0 early before coming back with two runs each in the fourth and the seventh to tie the game.
To get on the scoreboard in the fourth, Pacific plated two runs on just one hit. The Boxers tied it in the seventh as
Kiana Kushiyama and
Nicole Martinez started the inning, reaching on a single and a walk to put runners on first and second. Then, the duo moved up a base on a
Kaitlynn Donaca sacrifice bunt.
Montana Vaught doubled to left field, scoring Kushiyama but Martinez was thrown out at the plate. The rally continued as
Hailey Miller scored Vaught to tie the game at 4 with a RBI single.
Pacific stranded a pair of base runners in the top of the eighth before the Pirates capitalized on a Boxers error. Again, Whitworth managed to score the winning run with two outs to end the game.
Offensively, Pacific had 10 hits including a pair from Sydney Sahfeld and
Kiana Kushiyama to lead the Boxers. The Pirates had eight hits including two from Kinsey McNaught in the win.
Next, the Boxers will continue its season at the Northwest Conference Tournament.
