Boxers Split Doubleheader with Linfield

Andrew Thomas Hits Three Home Runs in Twinbill

Pacific University sophomore Andrew Thomas had three home runs as the Boxers split a doubleheader with Linfield, winning game one by a 15-3 margin and losing game two, 8-4.

With the game tied at one, Pacific busted the game open with an eight-run third inning for a 9-1 lead. Then, they added to the lead for an eventual 15-1 lead before the Wildcats scored two in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.

Thomas sparked an offensive explosion with a pair of home runs in the first game as the Boxers plated 15 runs – its most since a similar offensive output in the season finale in 2017 against George Fox.

The Escondido, California native became the second Boxer on the season to hit a grand slam with his clearing the left-field fence as part of an eight-run third inning. The last Boxer to hit two home runs in a game was Ryan Krout, who did it twice last season, most recently on March 19 against Corban.

In addition to the efforts by Thomas in game one, Brad Altomare went 3-for-4 with four runs scored, plus Tanner Johnson went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Johnson joined in the home run efforts with a two-run roundtripper in the fifth.

All the offense made a winner of the reigning NWC Pitcher Student-Athlete of the Week, Derek Eubanks for the second-straight week. Eubanks scattered seven hits and struck out five for the win.

In game two, a four-run second inning by the host Wildcats put the home team ahead and forced the Boxers to play from behind for the remainder of the contest.

Pacific cut the deficit to two with a pair of runs in its half of the third. The Wildcats came back with two of its own in its half of the inning.

Pacific got its last two runs on a two-run home run by Thomas in the ninth. He led the Boxers with a pair of hits in the loss.

The series will be on the line in Sunday's series finale at noon.
