Boxers and Knights Split Doubleheader

The Pacific University softball team split a doubleheader with Warner Pacific to begin the home portion of its 2020 schedule, losing game one by a 4-3 margin and winning the nightcap by an 8-0 in five innings on Saturday.

The Boxers (1-4) found themselves playing from behind in the first game as the visiting Knights took leads in the first and fifth inning and the deciding run in the seventh en route to the win. Junior shortstop Jill Uyeda had three hits and senior third baseman Katelyn Macatis-Smith added two as the Boxers had 10 hits in the loss.

The Knights (1-1) were able to record eight hits including three from Emma Foster in the win. McKenzie Pierce went the distance, allowing 10 hits and a strikeout for the victory.

A solo home run in the second inning by Devinne Amesquita put the visitors ahead 1-0. Pacific managed to load the bases in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to plate a run. The Boxers managed tie it in the fifth on a RBI single by Hannah Williams.

Then, Warner Pacific regained the lead with a two-run home run by Katie Gleasman in the sixth. The Knights added to their lead with another run in the seventh that proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Boxers plated a run each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, respectively.

In the nightcap, Pacific came out hungry for a win and it was on full display as they scored seven runs in the first inning en route to an 8-0 win in five innings. The Boxers used its speed and five hits for the early lead. Junior outfielder Nicole Martinez led the Pacific attack with two hits as six others had a hit in the win.

Sophomore Rylee Patton pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout for the Boxers, allowing just a fourth inning single to Amesquita to keep her away from the no hitter.

Next, Pacific will travel to the Lone Star State and play Hardin Simmons (Feb. 13), LeTourneau University (Feb. 14) and East Texas Baptist (Feb. 16) and travel to Louisiana to face Centenary on Feb. 15. On all four dates, the Boxers are scheduled to play doubleheaders.
