The Pacific University softball team dropped a twinbill to host No. 3 Linfield, losing 10-2 (6 innings) and 3-0 on Sunday.
Linfield (10-0, 4-0 NWC) had 10 hits in the game one victory including three from Katie Phillips, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Teammates Kelsey Wilkinson and Kamryn Appling each had two hits in the win. Starting pitcher Maddy Podnar raised her record to 5-0 despite giving up eight hits to the Boxers.
Pacific (4-11, 0-4 NWC) was led by a pair of two-hit games from Katelyn Macatis-Smith and
Hailey Miller (pictured).
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added to its lead with a four-run fifth inning. The Boxers scored its only two runs in the top of the sixth. A RBI single by Miller spoiled the shutout bid, driving in
Montana Vaught, who doubled to begin the inning.
Katie Carlos drove in the other run for Pacific, who stranded the bases loaded to end the inning. Linfield closed out the game scoring four runs on three hits in its half of the inning to end the contest.
In game two, the contest was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Wildcats scored an unearned run for a 1-0 lead.
In the top half of the inning, Pacific stranded a pair of runners in scoring position. Linfield added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homerun by Apling.
The Boxers outhit the Wildcats by a 6-5 margin in the loss. Miller had two more hits to lead Pacific.
Next up for Pacific, in two weeks, they will travel to Spokane to face Whitworth for a four-game series on Mar. 14 and 15.
