Pacific Baseball Takes Series Against Whitworth with 8-1 in Series Finale

Any coach would tell you that if you saw your pitchers give up five hits and your offense pound out 13 hits and score eight runs in return that it is the recipe for success. That is exactly the recipe for the Pacific University baseball team on Sunday as the Boxers posted an 8-1 win over Whitworth to secure a weekend series over the reigning Northwest Conference regular season champion.

Pacific (9-7, 7-2) had 13 hits including four from Tyler Quinn (pictured), who became the third Boxer in 2020 to have a four-hit game, in the win. Quinn sparked the Boxer offense from his leadoff spot in the bottom of the first with his second home run of the season. Andrew Thomas and Ryan Krout had three and two hits, respectively.

Whitworth (11-5, 4-2 NWC) was held in check by Boxers' pitchers Sage Dunaway and Gavin Bullock, who held the Pirates' offense to five hits for just the second time on the season. All five hits were singles. Pacific pitchers limited Whitworth to two runs over the last 23 innings of the series.

Sage Dunaway
Sage Dunaway went six solid innings, striking out two and scattering four hits en route to the win.
Quinn and the Boxers scored two runs each in the first two innings for an early 4-0 lead to give ample support to Dunaway, who raised his record to 2-1. Dunaway went six solid innings, striking out two and scattering four hits before handing the ball to Bullock. The senior from Snohomish, Washington picked up where he left off on Saturday. He allowed just one hit over three innings en route to the save.

With a 4-0 lead after the first two innings, the Boxers plated a run in the fourth and three in the fifth inning. Quinn was involved in the run in the fourth, scoring from first on a ball hit by Tanner Johnson that was misplayed by the Pirates.

Whitworth picked up an unearned run off Dunaway in the sixth to avoid the shutout.

Next, the Boxers will travel to Walla Walla for a three-game series at Whitman. Action will get underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14 at noon.
