Boxers Drop Points to Undefeated Lutes

FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University women's soccer team defended well against an undefeated Pacific Lutheran side, but the Lutes barely edged the 1-0 victory to grab three points on the road.

Pacific (3-5-1, 1-4-1 NWC) were very difficult to breakdown in 90-minute contest but struggled to create many scoring chances. Pacific Lutheran (9-0-0, 5-0-0 NWC) were the dominant team and fired nine shots with five on target while winning seven corner kicks.

The defensive backline of Julianna Ventura (Junior/Pasco, WA), Elizabeth Blair (Senior/Cottonwood, UT), Catalina Alvarado (Junior/Tucson, AZ), and Sequoia Gregory (Freshman/Eugene, OR) put in a fantastic performance, keeping a talented Pacific Lutheran at bay.

Mikayla Farrow (Sophomore/Sparks, NV) looked dangerous on the attack yet again, registering one of the Boxers' two shots.

The Lutes held majority of the possession but did little to test Catherine Corlett (Sophomore/Gilbert, AZ) in goal. The best chance for the visitors came in the 41st minute when a great pass sent Hannah Cecil through on goal, but the forward's shot would roll just outside the post.

Pacific Lutheran finally got their goal shortly after halftime when they won a corner. The ball was delivered into a dangerous area and it forced a foul inside the six-yard, awarding the Lutes a penalty kick. Alyssa Leong stepped up to take the spot kick and converted to give her team what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

The Boxers nearly equalized in the 82nd minute when Ivette Garcia-Gomez (Sophomore/Hillsboro, OR) found some space in behind the PLU defense. The sophomore saw the keeper off her line and attempted to loft a shot into the back of the net, but the ball would strike the crossbar and clatter away.

The Lutes would hold on for the final 10 minutes and head back to Tacoma with all three points.

By The Numbers
  • Corlett made four saves between the posts.
  • The Boxers have not beaten the Lutes since the 2015 season.
