Murphy Has Career Night as Boxers Take Down Loggers

TACOMA, Wash. Mara Murphy set a new school record for kills in a four-set match, leading the Pacific University volleyball team in their four-set win over Puget Sound on Friday night. (27-25, 25-18, 31-33, 25-22)

Mara Murphy (Freshman/Salt Lake City, Utah) notched a career-high 28 kills while hitting .328. Murphy's 28 kills in the four-set match breaks the previous record of 27, which was set in 2013. The freshman helped out on the defensive end as well, racking up nine digs. Alison Brown (Sophomore/Oregon City, OR) continued her hot streak with 16 kills in the match.

Elika Unti (Senior/Castro Valley, CA) sent home seven kills while Carissa Ramirez (Senior/Hillsboro, OR) chipped in with six kills on the night. Shianne Cambra (Junior/Kapolei, HI) dished out 47 assists as the Boxers' setter and picked up the double-double with 15 digs.

Haley Walz (Senior/Tucson, AZ) led the Pacific defense with 18 digs to her name.

The Boxers (6-10, 6-6 NWC) were able to rally for the 27-25 win after dropping the first five points of the opening set. Pacific was led by Murphy in the first set as she tallied eight kills. The Boxers were able to go on an 8-2 run to take the 27th and deciding point.

In set two, Pacific jumped out to an early 7-2 lead behind two service aces from Danica Nelson (Freshman/Folsom, CA) and Unti. The Boxers would never relinquish the lead following the fast start, cruising to a 25-18 victory in set two.

The third set was hotly contested and took a few extra points to find a winner. The teams would trade points until a 4-0 run gave the Boxers a 12-7 lead. The Loggers would rally from behind to race out to a 23-18 advantage, but Pacific would roar all the way back to tie things up at 25-25. Pacific forced three separate match points but were unable to pull off the sweep, falling 31-33.

The Boxers would rebound to wrap things up in set number four. The hosts got out to a fast start, taking a 4-1 lead. However, Pacific would bounce back yet again to take a commanding 20-15 lead. Puget Sound made one last push, putting together a 5-0 run to even the score at 20-20, but the resilient Boxers clinched the victory when Brown slammed down the final kill giving her team the win to take back to Forest Grove.
