Boxers Cap Off Perfect Weekend in California

CLAREMONT, Calif.- The Pacific University women's basketball capped off a perfect weekend in California with their 70-51 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps behind Camy Aguinaldo's (Senior/Honolulu, HI) game-high 23 points.

The senior was feeling it from beyond the arc, making 4-of-5 shots from three-point range while shooting 8-of-16 from the floor. Aguinaldo also tallied five assists and three rebounds on the day.

The Boxers shot the ball very well away from their home gym, shooting 43.1% from the field and 85.7% from the free throw line. Pacific was incredibly tough defensively, holding the Athenas to just 29.3% shooting and 20% from the perimeter.

Sydney Gray (Junior/Central Point, OR) was the other Boxer to finish in double figures with 12 points, while grabbing seven rebounds.

Brilie Kovaloff (Junior/Honolulu, HI) racked up nine points and Rilee Price (Junior/Brea, CA) registered a team-high 10 rebounds, chipping in with six points of her own.

How It Happened

It was a sloppy start to the contest as only one basket would be scored between the two teams in the opening three minutes. The Boxers would eventually take the lead after back-to-back scores from Price, making the score 7-6. Two layups from Gray would extend the lead before Aguinaldo knocked down a three at the buzzer to make it 18-13 after the first 10 minutes.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the second period and Pacific would be forced to endure a scoring-drought of nearly four minutes before another Aguinaldo three got the Boxers back on track. Despite a difficult offensive quarter, Pacific would hold a 31-26 lead at the break.

Aguinaldo picked up where she left off and nailed a step-back three to start the third quarter. CMS cut the lead to just three points but Kaylee-Brooke Manuel (Junior/Nanakuli, HI) would respond by making two consecutive layups to keep the hosts at bay. Hannah Stein (Sophomore/Eugene, OR) got in on the action by hitting a three-pointer of her own to give Pacific some much needed breathing room towards the end of the third quarter.

With a 10-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the Boxers started to pull away, using a 9-2 run to make the score 59-43 with just over five minutes to play. The Athenas continued to struggle offensively due to some increased pressure from the Pacific defense and the Boxers would cruise to the 70-51 victory.
