SPOKANE, Wash. – The Pacific University football team traveled to Spokane, Wash. to face a talented Whitworth Pirates team and gutted out the 14-7 victory behind a dominant performance on the defensive end of the ball.
Both teams struggled to find any rhythm offensively in the bitter cold as neither team reached 250 yards of total offense.
Pacific's (5-3, 4-2 NWC) defense recorded 10 tackles-for-loss, a season high, while pressuring the quarterback all afternoon with four sacks in the contest.
Michael Timmerman (Senior/Torrance, CA) led the way with 10 total tackles and two tackles-for-loss.
Sancho Eskridge (Sophomore/Carmichael, CA) and
Chase Hofmann (Junior/Half Moon Bay, CA) were flying around the field, as the safeties racked up seven tackles apiece.
Joshua Harris (Senior/Sonora, CA) was the bright spot for a struggling offense, notching his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season. On 32 carries, the senior ran for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
Kenyon Harris (Senior/Ogden, UT) had a decent day, going 15-27 for 183 yards through the air.
Ty Hargis (Senior/Lebanon, OR) was the quarterback's favorite target on the day with five catches for 91 yards.
How It Happened
The offensive woes began on Pacific's opening drive with a fumble on the Whitworth 11-yard line.
The Pirates took over possession and were driving deep into Boxers' territory, but a
Declan Brown (Senior/Layton, UT) sack would force a turnover on downs.
Both teams would punt on their next drives but Pacific would finally get on the board early in the second quarter when Josh Harris found the end zone from 11-yards out to give his team the 7-0 lead.
Whitworth would answer on the ensuing drive when Jaedyn Prewitt hit Jersusalem To'oto'o in the end zone to tie the score at 7-7. This would be the score at the break as neither team could sustain a drive for the remainder of the half.
The Pacific defense came up clutch yet again when
Loudyn Reese (Junior/Hillsboro, OR) got in on the action and forced a fumble on the Boxers' 12-yard line and
Rustin Williams (Junior/Sherwood, OR) would recover to get the ball back.
Kenyon Harris and company took over at their own 7-yard line in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The offense marched down the field in a 12-play, 93-yard drive to regain the lead. Josh Harris would cap off the drive with a two-yard plunge to put his team back out in front.
The hosts managed to reach the Pacific 18-yard line on their final drive, but the defense came up big as
Robert Wood (Junior/Vallejo, CA) broke up the pass on the last play of the game to clinch the 14-7 victory in one of the most difficult places to play in the Northwest Conference.
By The Numbers
- Isaiah Pitre (Redshirt Sophomore/Oakland, CA) had four receptions for 37 yards.
- This was Pacific's first win in Spokane since 2013.
