FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University women's basketball team remained undefeated in Northwest Conference play with their dominant 76-50 win over Pacific Lutheran.
The Boxers (6-3, 2-0 NWC) never trailed on Saturday evening, picking up a wire-to-victory to complete their perfect weekend. It wasn't the best shooting night for Pacific as they posted a field-goal percentage of 37.3%, but the Boxers found their stroke from the perimeter as they knocked down 11-of-28 three pointers.
Pacific Lutheran (4-3, 0-2 NWC) was forced into 20 turnovers by the Pacific defense and the visitors struggled to find many open looks, shooting just 33.3% from the floor and 10.5% from three-point range.
Camy Aguinaldo (Senior/Honolulu, HI) matched her career-high with 29 points in the contest. The senior was 11-of-24 from the field and went 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Brilie Kovaloff (Junior/Honolulu, HI) continued her hot streak from beyond the arc by hitting 3 of her 5 three-point attempts, racking up 15 points on the night.
Sydney Gray (Junior/Central Point, OR) had a great all-around performance as she played 34 of the 40 minutes while leading the Boxers with eight boards. The junior also tallied seven points on the day.
Rilee Price (Junior/Brea, CA) chipped in with seven points as well while grabbing five rebounds.
How It Happened
The Boxers started their impressive offensive display from the opening tip when Aguinaldo and Price netted layups on their first two possessions. A bucket in the paint from
Kaylee-Brooke Manuel (Junior/Nanakuli, HI) helped extend the lead before Kovaloff rattled off five straight points to make it a seven-point advantage. Aguinaldo nailed a three with four seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 23-14 in favor of the hosts.
The Boxers started to pull away in the second period when they put together an 8-0 run to push the lead to 17 points. Aguinaldo made another one of her patented buzzer-beaters just before the end of the first half to extend the lead to 20 points (43-23).
Pacific continued to cruise in the third quarter behind a three-pointer from Gray and two layups from their senior point guard. Price got in on the action with a deep three-pointer before
Hannah Stein (Sophomore/Eugene, OR) buried a three-ball of her own. A short run from the Lutes in the final minute of the third quarter would slightly cut the deficit, but the Boxers would retain a 61-43 lead.
Aguinaldo opened the fourth quarter with a step-back three to get Pacific back on track.
Marissa Layosa (Sophomore/Hanamaulu, HI) entered the contested and promptly hit a pull-up jumper to help put the Boxers out of sight. Pacific closed out the game easily and earned the 76-50 win to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
