Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Three of Four Against Puget Sound

After opening Northwest Conference play last weekend with a four-game series split at Pacific Lutheran the Boxer baseball team was back at home over the weekend and won the series against Puget Sound taking three of the four games.

Boxers claimed game one in electric fashion winning 8-7 in 11 innings but fell 9-4 in game two on Saturday, then on Sunday the Boxers cruised to a 10-0 seven inning win and wrapped up the series with a 6-1 win.

The weekend opened up with scoring early for the Boxers as Chase Anderson blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the first in game one to give the Boxers the early advantage. Pacific added two more in the second on a two-run homer from Tyler Quinn and another in the third, while Puget Sound got on the board with two runs in the third. Up 4-2 headed to the eighth the Boxers saw the Loggers score three to snag the lead but Pacific answered in the bottom of the ninth with a RBI double by Ryan Krout to tie the game and force extra innings. Both teams tallied a run in the tenth and in the 11th Puget Sound scored a run to lead 7-6 but a Logger error helped the Boxers tie the game in the bottom of the 11th. After tying the game up Josh Escobar hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the winning run for the Boxers in the 11th, 8-7.

Quinn went 3-5 with three RBI, a run scored, and home run, while Anderson was 2-4 with an RBI, home run, and two runs scored. Krout and Jordan Hara each had a multi-hit game for the Boxers, while Davis Koester earned the win on the hill tossing three and one-third innings of relief giving up just two runs on one hit and struckout two.

Game two of the series saw Pacific score early again going up 2-0 after just the first inning but Puget Sound tied the game in the third and behind a five-run sixth inning handed the Boxers a 9-4 loss. In the loss Anderson went 2-4 with two runs scored and a double, while Quinn was 2-3 with an RBI. Kahi Bisho tossed a solid five innings as the starter giving up just three runs on two hits and five walks, while striking out seven and took a no decision.

After a split on Saturday the Boxers made sure the first game was no doubt in their favor blanking the Loggers 10-0 and claiming victory in seven innings as Pacific out-hit Puget Sound 13-4 in the contest. Scoring again started early for Pacific as Hara recorded a RBI double in the first inning and the Boxers would score at least one run in five of the next six innings with two in the seventh to finish the game.

Hara was 2-4 with a home run, run scored, double, and four RBI, while Anderson was 2-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Isaac Lovings also went 2-3, while Brad Altomare and Brandon Silowka each had two-hits. Derek Eubanks earned the win tossing five innings as the starter giving up just three hits and two walks, while striking out five.

Boxers capped the series with a 6-1 win in the fourth game which was the only game of the series that Pacific did not score first as the Loggers plated their only run of the game in the top of the first. In the bottom of the second the Boxers saw Krout blast a grand slam and then a two-run home run by Hara in the bottom of the fifth lifted the Boxers to a 6-1 win.

Krout was strong in the contest going 3-4 with a grand slam, double, run scored, and four RBI, while on the mound Brian Kraft earned the win tossing four and two-thirds innings giving up just one run on four hits and two walks, and struckout four.

The 3-1 weekend for the Boxers move them to 10-6 on the season and 5-3 in Conference play. Action continues for the Boxers on March 27th and 28th on the road with more NWC action with a four-game series at Lewis & Clark.
