Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Three Out of Four Versus Whitman

After splitting the season opening series with George Fox the Boxer baseball team was in action at Chuck Bafaro stadium for the first time this season and earned their first series win of the year taking three of four against Whitman in a non-conference series.

Boxers swept the double-header on Saturday with 11-9 and 7-4 victories, and on Sunday took game one of the double-header 8-6 but Whitman snagged the final game of the series 7-2.

Game one of the four-game set with the Blues didn't start well for the Boxers as Pacific found themselves down 4-0 before they were able to even swing the bats, but the Boxers were not frazzled. Pacific capitalized on a Whitman error in the bottom of the first to score a run then plated three in the third off a three-run homer by Isaac Lovings. Then the game flipped in the Boxers favor in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning highlighted by a two RBI double from Jordan Hara and an RBI single by Lovings. The five-run output made it 9-5. Boxers tacked on two more in the sixth, while Whitman made things interesting with a run in the fifth and eighth and two in top of the ninth, but the Boxers secured the 11-9 win.

Lovings was 3-5 at the plate with a home run, four RBI's, and two runs scored. Chase Anderson and Ryan Krout each had a multi-hit game as part of the 13-hit attack for the Boxers.

It was early scoring for Whitman again in game two of the series as the Blues tallied two runs in the top of the first and it remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Boxers worked the bases loaded and drew a walk to get their first run. The fifth and sixth innings proved to be the offensive ones for the Boxers scoring three runs in each half inning to take the lead. The fifth inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by Hara, while the sixth saw a RBI triple by Anderson to highlight the frame. Up 7-2 the Boxers looked to shut the door and did so in the seventh although the Blues managed two runs in the inning. Boxers claimed the 7-4 win.

Hara, Ian Blair and Tanner Johnson each had two hits in the game as Hara was 2-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI and Blair had a pair of RBIs. Kaih Bisho was strong in five innings giving up two runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out four and earned the win, while Tyler Nakata picked up the save.

On Sunday it was a scoreless contest through two innings until Whitman broke through in the top of the third with two runs and another in the fourth to lead 3-0 but the Boxers had a big answer. In the bottom of the fourth the Boxers tallied five runs with RBI singles from Anderson, Tyler Quinn and Brad Altomare highlighting the inning. Boxers added some insurance with a three-run seventh and Whitman closed the gap with three runs in the eighth, but Pacific held them off enough for the 8-6 win.

Reyn Okita helped led the offense going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Lovings and Krout each had a two-hit game. Will Clark tossed a solid six innings as the starter giving up three runs on five hits and walks, while striking out five to earn the win. While Sage Dunaway earned the save tossing an inning and a third.

After claiming victory in the first three games of the series the Boxers looked for the four-game sweep, but Whitman used late offense to head home with one win in the series. The Boxers unlike the first three games of the series scored first plating a run in the second, but Whitman answered with a run in the fourth and fifth innings and then had an outburst of five runs in the seventh. Pacific didn't go away quietly as they worked the bases loaded in the seventh but managed only one run out of the situation falling 7-2.

Altomare led the Boxers in the loss going 2-2 while Pacific only had five hits in the contest. Brian Kraft tossed five and a third innings as the starter for the Boxers.

Boxers now are set to open Northwest Conference play next weekend Saturday, March 13th and Sunday, March 14th in Tacoma, Washington for a four-game series against Pacific Lutheran.
