SPOKANE, Wash.- The Pacific University Volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller Saturday night in Spokane, 2-3. The Boxers fought to the very end, but dropped the fifth set to previously ranked Whitworth University, 12-15.
The Boxers (3-5, 1-1 NWC) fell behind early in the match as they lost the first two sets 18-25. The Boxer offense was unable to get going during the first two sets, but in set three they were able to tally an impressive 18 kills in the set. The Pirates were up 22-18 in the third set, and were looking to seal a three-set victory. However, the Boxers had other plans. Chloe Elmore (Salem, OR) took command behind the service line and rattled off 6 straight serves, one of which was an ace, to get the Boxers back into the match. The Boxers survived two match points and ultimately won the set off an Elika Unti (Castro Valley, CA) kill, 28-26.
Set four proved to be yet another tight battle as there were 12 tied scores and six lead changes throughout the set. The Boxer offense collected 14 kills in the set. They finished off with a Mara Murphy (Salt Lake City, UT) kill that took the set 28-26.
The Boxers fought hard in the fifth set and even led the set at two different points, but they were unable to close the deciding set and fell 12-15.
Unti had quite the night statistically as she led the Boxers in kills, aces, and blocks. Unti posted a match high 23 kills with a .367 hitting percentage. She contributed six blocks and three aces on the outing. Murphy had her third straight double digit kill performance, as she added 18 kills to the 56 overall kills by the Boxer offense.
Junior setter Shaianne Cambra posted her first double double on the season with a match high 49 assists and 20 digs. Although she only stands at 5'5", she chipped in three blocks against a strong Pirate offense. In addition to Cambra's 20 digs, Haley Walz (Tucson, AZ) chipped in 21 digs of her own.
Pacific will host Puget Sound next Friday at 7 p.m. in the Stoller Center for their next conference match up.
