Pioneers Slip Past Boxers

PORTLAND, Ore.- The Pacific University women's soccer team traveled to Portland to take on Lewis & Clark in the first of two Northwest Conference matches this weekend, but the Pioneers came out on top, nicking a goal in the 59th minute to grab three points.

Lewis & Clark (4-2-1, 2-1-0 NWC) were effective on the attacking front, registering 12 shots in the contest. The Boxers (3-3-0, 1-2-0 NWC) did well to prevent many great scoring chances, holding the hosts to just three shots on target. Pacific struggled to finding any openings in the opponent's half, tallying just five shots.

The Boxers won six corners in the 90 minutes and proved to be a threat on the counter. However, the Pioneers controlled the match from start to finish, enjoying majority of the possession while looking quite dangerous going forward.

Mikaya Farrow (Sophomore/Sparks, NV) made her presence felt on the wing yet again, firing one of Pacific's three shots on target. Julianna Ventura (Junior/Pasco, WA) was solid in defense and got forward from her defensive position to deliver a shot on goal.

The teams would go into the dressing room level after the first 45 minutes, but Lewis & Clark broke through in the 59th minute when Chloe Helenihi found the back of the net. This would prove to be the winner for the hosts.

Ventura nearly equalized for the Boxers in the dying minutes. Pacific won a corner with less than five minutes remaining and the defender rose up to win the header, but her effort was denied by a diving save. The Pioneers would see out the victory after some solid defending to earn all three points.
