Pacific's Comeback Attempt Thwarted by Lutes

This is the second consecutive five set match between the Lutes and Boxers.

TACOMA, Wash. – Pacific Volleyball did everything they could Friday night against Pacific Lutheran to force a deciding set before the Lutes fought to the 3-2 win.

Statistically the match was very even however the Lutes were able to gain an edge by forcing 11 receiving errors for the Boxers.

Top Performers

  • Mara Murphy had 20 kills on the evening which was the only Boxer with double digit kills.
  • Sarah Hon tallied nine kills while hitting an impressive .529.
  • Claire Stipsits was a steady presence for the Boxers in the back row with 14 digs.

How It Happened

Pacific Lutheran seemed as though they came ready to play in the first set with a dominating 25-15 opening set win.

The second set seemed as though it was going to be a repeat of the first set when PLU raced out to a 14-7 lead. Pacific however had other plans by responding with a 5-0 run of their own. Needing to battle and fight back from another scoring run from the hosts, the Boxers were able to tie the game at 21 following an Alison Brown kill. PLU would score the final four points consecutively to take a 2-0 lead.

Using the small amount of offensive momentum that they gained in the previous set, the Boxers dominated the third set earning the 25-13 set win.

The opening 12 points of set four was very tightly contested with both sides trading points. Not wanting to head back to Forest Grove early, the visitors took complete control of the set following a 14-4 scoring run to take a 20-10 lead. The set was capped off with great defense and blocking forcing an attack error and giving the Boxers the 25-19 win.

The deciding set was very similar to that of the first set as it was all PLU who outscored the Boxers 15-4.

What It Means

The Boxers record falls to 12-9 while their NWC record is at 7-7. Pacific Lutheran with the win earned the season sweep of the Boxers with both matches going to the fifth set.
