FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Pacific University Baseball team cruised to two convincing wins over Eastern Oregon on Sunday afternoon, sweeping the doubleheader to win the series.
The Boxers (5-2) used a six-run fifth inning to propel themselves to a 9-4 win in game one before exploding for 16 hits in the second half of the doubleheader to win the contest 14-4.
CJ Coyler (Sophomore/Gilroy, CA) blasted a two-run shot, his second home run of the season, to cap off the big inning in the first game of the day. In game two, Coyler was called upon to get the final four outs. He was perfect in his outing, striking out two of the four hitters he faced without allowing a baserunner.
Ryan Krout (Senior/Washougal, WA) was seeing the ball extremely well on Sunday as he went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBI in the first contest before adding another hit in game two.
Ty Yukumoto (Freshman/Waipahu, HI) had four hits on the day, going 3-for-4 in Pacific's first win on Sunday.
Tyler Quinn (Junior/Millani, HI) launched his first long ball of the year, a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning of game two.
Cole Strober (Senior/Pacific City, OR) came off the bench and enjoyed a two-hit day. The senior legged out two infield hits and scored both times he reached base.
The Boxers got two solid outings from
Derek Eubanks (Senior/Oregon City, OR) and
Cayden Okada (Freshman/Waipahu, HI). Eubanks was excellent in his six innings of work, allowing just one run while striking out four hitters to earn his first win of the young season.
Okada impressed in his first appearance of 2022, tossing five strong frames to grab the win. The freshman right-hander surrendered just two runs and six hits while punching out four.
Game 1
The Mountaineers struck first in the top of the first inning but the Boxers quickly replied when Krout doubled home Quinn to even the score.
Yukumoto drew a walk with the bases loaded in the second inning to give Pacific the lead, but an inning-ending double play would bring the rally to a halt.
Krout came up big yet again in the fifth inning, driving home two Boxers with his second double of the contest. Yukumoto followed by ripping a triple into the right center gap to score Krout and keep the inning alive. After an
Isaac Lovings (Senior/Beaverton, OR) sacrifice fly, Coyler stepped to the plate and smashed a two-run bomb to straight-away centerfield. Krout's third double would allow the Boxers to bring another run across in the sixth, giving his team a 9-1 lead.
Davis Koester (Sophomore/Trout Lake, WA) and
Nick Bentsen (Senior/Bellevue, WA) combined to toss the last three innings and get Pacific to the finish line.
Game 2
Eastern Oregon took a 2-0 lead early in game two but Pacific would bang out five hits in the third inning to regain the advantage. Lovings,
Patrick Muskat (Redshirt Freshman/Beaverton, OR), and
Andrew Thomas (Senior/Escondido, CA) each brought runners to the plate with a base hit.
In the fifth inning, the Boxers would load the bases with two outs when Koester hit a chopper to deep shortstop. The throw across the diamond was wide and it would allow all three runners to come around and score, giving Pacific a 6-2 lead.
The Boxers completely broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to make it a 10-run advantage. Quinn led off the inning with a first-pitch homer, a towering no-doubter to left field.
JP Lyssenko (Junior/San Mateo, CA) and
Max Nealon (Senior/Redmond, WA) got in on the hit parade with a couple hits to extend the lead.
Pacific would handle the Mountaineers the rest of the way and won via the 10-run mercy rule, taking the contest 14-4.
