Krout Homers Twice; Boxers Avoid Sweep at Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. –  The Pacific University baseball team fell in the bottom of the ninth in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Puget Sound, but avoided a sweep with a 5-3 win in the series finale.

The final game of the series was halted after six innings to due excessive rain in the Tacoma area. The Boxers (7-6, 2-4 NWC) held a 5-3 lead after six complete innings and escaped with the victory. Pacific struggled to get the bats going as they mustered just nine hits over the two games.

Ryan Krout (Senior/Washougal, WA) had a couple big swings in his 2-for-6 on the day, launching two big flies. The senior has four home runs on the season which matches the team high.

Derek Eubanks (Senior/Oregon City, OR) delivered another solid outing in the first game of the day, tossing 5.1 innings while surrendering just two earned runs.

Kahi Bisho (Senior/Honolulu, HI) got the nod in game two and finished his outing without allowing an earned run. The right hander was brilliant in his three innings, held the Loggers to just two hits while striking out three.

Game 1

Puget Sound struck first by capitalizing on a leadoff double to take an early 1-0 lead.

The two teams would go scoreless for the next four frames in what would prove to be a pitchers' duel. In the top of the sixth, Krout finally got his team on the board with a solo shot to left field, evening the score at 1-1.

UPS would quickly respond by pushing a run across in the bottom half of the inning to regain their one-run advantage.

Isaac Lovings (Senior/Beaverton, OR) blasted his first homer of the year in the seventh to tie things up yet again.

The Loggers shutout the Boxers for the next two frames, giving themselves an opportunity to win it in the bottom of the ninth. Using two hits, UPS would walk it off to snatch the win and clinch the series victory.

Game 2

Pacific answered well in the final game of the series as Andrew Thomas (Senior/Escondido, CA) got things started with a two-run home run to give his team the lead.

UPS got one run back in the third, but Krout would smash his second long ball of the afternoon to restore the two-run lead.

Cole Strober (Senior/Pacific City, OR) was awarded the start in the series finale and legged out an RBI-triple to extend the lead. The Boxers would tack on another run in the fifth before the game was eventually halted due to heavy rain. Pacific held a 5-3 lead when play was suspended, making it an official contest and a victory for the Boxers.
