Cross Country 2023 NCAA DIII West Region Championships

Riverside, Calif. - Pacific's cross country teams competed in the 2023 NCAA DIII West Region Cross Country Championships hosted by University of La Verne at Riverside City Cross Country Course on Saturday, November 11, 2023. The men raced 8,000m and the women raced 6,000. The men finished in 23rd place with 684 points and the women took 12th place with 313 points.

Henry Tierney and Annie Berry led their teams in the 8k and 6k races, respectively. Tierney finished in 120th place, clocking in at 27:25.6. Berry led the women's team with her 21st place finish, and a time of 23:07.6. Her top-35 place finish earns her All-West Region Honors for the second year in a row. Pomona-Pitzer won the men's race with 45 points, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the women's race with an impressive 32 points.

At the Regional Championships, the winning team from each of the 10 regions get an automatic bid for the NCAA National Championships. Twenty-two additional teams are selected at-large to make 32 teams at the championships. The first seven student-athletes from each region who are not part of a qualifying team also qualify for the National Championships. Four teams were selected to go to Nationals out of the west region on both sides. For the men, those teams are Pomona-Pitzer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, George Fox and Colorado College. For the women, those teams are Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, George Fox, Colorado College and UC Santa Cruz. On the women's side, Annie Berry ended up being the #8 individual runner, and the top 7 individuals qualify for the National Championships, so Berry was the first women to miss out on qualifying.

On the women's side, the Northwest Conference will be represented at Nationals by George Fox's team, and by Riley Buese and Malia Heien of Lewis & Clark individually. On the men's side, the NWC will be represented at Nationals by George Fox' team, and Ryan Stracke of PLU and Ben Kerr of Puget Sound as individuals.

"The post season has been a mix of accomplishment and disappointment for our teams," said head cross country coach Bailee Krings. "That's the way this sport can go sometimes. I feel proud of a lot of what our runners have accomplished over the last several months, and I also know many of them wanted more out of their seasons. Overall, this season has been full of joy and I'm grateful for every moment of it, and I think our runners are, too. They'll take a break here and then get ready for a great track season!"
