TACOMA, Wash. –Playing their fourth straight road series to start the season, the Pacific baseball team swept the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran University this weekend with a 1-0 win Saturday along with 15-8 and 17-3 victories on Sunday. Due to weather considerations the usual series schedule was flopped to play one game Saturday and the series doubleheader on Sunday. The Boxers now stand at 4-2 in Northwest Conference play and take on George Fox University in their home opener on Wednesday in a single game make-up contest.
"We played complimentary baseball – Good pitching, clutch defense, and we broke out offensively. That's a nice formula for success," Head Coach
Brian Billings said. "A lot of players and pitchers contributed this weekend which will pay big dividends down the road."
Game 1
Senior
Will Clark (Boise, ID) took the mound for the Boxers and looked every bit like the pitcher that was named NWC Pitcher of the Year in 2021. Clark threw seven scoreless innings while giving up only five hits and striking out four. Clark has not yet allowed an earned run in NWC play and has held opponents to a .125 batting average in those starts.
Cayden Okada (Sophomore/ Waipahu, HI) finished the final two innings for his first save of the year, giving up no hits and striking out two.
CJ Colyer (Junior/ Gilroy, CA) provided the only offense the Boxers would need on the day with his 8th inning single that scored Senior
Tyler Quinn (Mililani, HI), who started the inning off with a bunt single and advanced to third on a Lute error when
Ty Yukumoto (Sophomore/ Waipahu, HI) laid down a bunt as well.
Game 2
The Boxers wasted no time waking up the bats on the second day of the series plating five runs in the first inning. A single by
Dawson Tokishi (Junior/ Kahului, HI), a double by Quinn, a single by Yukumoto and a three-run home run by Colyer gave the Boxers a 4-0 lead before a single out was recorded.
Walker Matthews (Senior/ Carlsbad, CA) fielder's choice RBI added the fifth run of the inning. The offensive explosion continued with two runs in second inning, four in the fourth, 3 in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 15-4 lead. Quinn and Yukumoto both finished the game with four hits in the game, and Colyer led the Boxers with 5 RBI. Drew Thomas added his 5 th home run of the season in the win. Freshman
Jackson Price (Hillsboro, OR) threw four solid innings in the start, allowing 2 earned runs (4 total) on 7 hits while striking out three batters.
Ayden Ruminski (Sophomore/ Puyallup, WA) got the win after throwing three innings and allowing two runs, both unearned.
Tyler Agnew (Senior/ Folsom, CA) and
Davis Koester (Junior/ Trout Lake, WA) finished off game one on the mound.
Game 3
The Boxers did one better in game 3 by putting up six runs in the first inning against the Lutes, and followed it up with another 6 runs in the fourth inning and 4 in the fifth to take a 16-0 lead. The Boxers amassed 11 extra base hits in the game including three-run home runs by Colyer and Senior
Isaac Lovings (Beaverton, OR). Colyer, for the second game in a day, had 5 RBI while Lovings had 4 RBI. Senior
Kahi Bisho (Honolulu, HI) took advantage of the big lead on the mound and used only 67 pitches in four innings of one-hit ball.
Hunter Edwards (Sophomore, Palmdale CA) earned his first win of the season throwing a scoreless fifth inning and six others finished out the final four frames to complete the sweep, allowing only one hit in the final five innings.
