Boxers Conclude 2023 Regular Season

FOREST GROVE, Ore.- The Pacific University baseball team concluded the 2023 regular season over the weekend with three non-conference games against conference opponents.

On Friday, the Boxers earned an 18-1 win over Willamette while game two on Saturday went to Puget Sound by a score of 11-8. The Boxers defeated Whitworth 11-7 on Sunday which was also Senior Day where they honored their 16 graduating seniors prior to the season finale.

Game 1

The Boxers earned the 18-1 win over Willamette on Friday behind a plethora of extra base hits as well as a tremendous performance on the mound by Will Clark who threw seven complete innings in the win.

Ty Yukumoto drove in the first run for either team in the bottom of the first when he drove in Tyler Quinn who stood on second base. Both Quinn and Yukumoto each tallied a double in the opening inning.

Pacific was able to record their third extra base hit of the game when Matt Gibbs lead of the bottom of the second. He was able to drive a ball to deep right centerfield that cleared the outfield fence for a solo homerun.

It felt like déjà vu in the bottom of the third when Quinn was able to produce his own solo homerun which gave the Boxers a 3-0 lead.

The visiting Bearcats were able to tight their deficit to 3-1 on a solo homerun in the top of the sixth before CJ Colyer was able to drive in a run on an RBI single.

The Boxers had an impressive six run inning in the bottom of the seventh powered by an Isaac Lovings grand slam. The Lovings homerun was his 16th of the season earning him the top spot in the Pacific record books for single season homeruns. Robert Drayer tallied the sixth run of the inning with a two-out double.

In the bottom of the eighth, the host Boxers put the game away for good as they scratched across eight runs giving them an 18-1 lead. The most notable hit of the inning was a two-out triple off the bat of Tyler Quinn who drove a line drive to left field. With the triple, Quinn completed the cycle in his sixth at-bat of the game.

David Allen would come in to close out the game in the top of the ninth giving Pacific the 18-1 win.

Game 2

Saturday's game would go to Puget Sound by a score of 11-8 after the visitors were able to score nine of their eleven runs in the first four innings.

The Loggers held a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Drew Thomas was able to hit a two-run homerun.

Davis Koester was able to hit the first homerun in his career in the bottom of the third when he hit a solo homerun down the left field line.

The Boxers started mounting a comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth when Lovings hit his 17th homerun of the season with a two-run blast before Quinn added a third run in the inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Boxers would not back down as they narrowed the deficit to 11-8 following a Colyer triple as well as a Lovings single.

Those would be the last runs the Boxers would score however as the Loggers took the game 11-8.

Game 3

Prior to the third game of the weekend, the Boxer took the time to honor 16 seniors that were about to play their final game at Chuck Bafaro stadium. Once the game got underway the Boxers were able to earn an 11-7 win over Whitworth.

Pacific took an early lead following a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first off the bat of Lovings. Whitworth responded to the two runs putting up two of their own in the top of the second.

The Boxers would reestablish their lead in the bottom of the third with a Colyer double that was followed up by an RBI single from Gibbs that drove in Colyer.

Lovings would add a run in the fifth with his third homerun in as many days. The long ball would just clear the outfield fence just above the 375 sign in right center.

With a 5-4 lead in the sixth, Lovings would pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice that he was able to run out down the first base line. Gibbs would follow Lovings to the plate and hit a homerun to straight away centerfield which gave the hosts a 9-4 lead. Quinn would add two more runs a few batters later with a single to left field.

Pacific would close out the game and earn an 11-7 win to close out the 2023 regular season.
