PORTLAND -- Behind a complete game by freshman pitcher
Nicholas Saelens, the Pacific baseball team continued to roll through the Northwest Conference, defeating Lewis & Clark 7-3 Saturday afternoon in game three to win its sixth straight NWC series.
Saelens allowed five hits and three runs over nine innings. He recorded 11 strikeouts.
Trailing 1-0, Pacific sophomore
Benjamin Lewis scored on an RBI single by
Riz Collado to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning.Â
The Boxers then took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning. After
Matt Gibbs scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by
Vincent Lagatta, Pacific scored two more runs on a double down the left field line by Collado.
Lewis & Clak couldn't keep Collado off the base paths. The junior was 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs and two stolen bases.Â
Davis Koester added an RBI double in the sixth inning to extend the Boxers lead to 5-1.
Pacific's victory came after Lewis & Clark won game two 6-2 earlier Saturday to even the series.Â
Game 2
Pacific tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by
Hunter Nishina. But the Pioneers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the eighth.Â
Nishina, Gibbs and Lagatta each had two hits in the loss.Â
FRIDAY
Game 1
Pacific opened the series with an 11-7 victory Friday afternoon.
The Boxers jumped on Lewis & Clark early with three runs in the top of the first inning. Koester had an RBI double and Gibbs hit his team-leading fourth home run in the frame.
With four runs in the fifth inning, Pacific stretched its lead to 11-3.
Pacific junior
Governor Aufranc earned the win, holding Lewis & Clark to six hits and four runs over six innings.
Senior
Hunter Edwards got the final out of the game to record his third save of the season.
Next: The Boxers return home to play the No. 11 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday at noon in a non-conference game. Pacific will then host George Fox next Saturday and Sunday in its final NWC series.
