Boxers split doubleheader with Lewis & Clark behind strong starting pitching

The Pacific baseball team received two stellar outings from its starting pitchers Saturday, splitting a Northwest Conference doubleheader with Lewis & Clark.

Game 1: Lewis & Clark 4, Pacific 3

Pacific junior Governor Aufranc allowed just one run through eight innings, but Lewis & Clark led off the ninth with a home run and added two more runs in the inning to rally past the Boxers.

Pacific scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Will Shelor crossed the plate on an RBI single to left field by Benjamin Lewis for the game's first run. Hunter Nishina made it 2-0 on a groundout by Jake Gallagher, and Lewis later scored on a wild pitch.

Shelor finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Trevor Kazahaya went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Game 2: Pacific 8, Lewis & Clark 4

Nicholas Saelens came within two outs of throwing back-to-back complete games. The Pacific sophomore pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out 11.

The Boxers never trailed in Game 2, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Aukai Arruda drove in Shelor with an RBI single to center field.

Pacific added two runs in the third, two more in the fifth and three in the seventh.

Arruda finished 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Shelor went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI. Miles Bergman was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
