Pacific claims first win with five-set comeback

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The third time was the charm.

Playing its third straight five-set match, including its second of the day, the Pacific volleyball team edged Occidental 3-2 Friday night in the Whittier Invite for the Boxers first win of the season.

Tied 21-21, Pacific scored four straight points to win the opening set 25-21. However, Occidental evened the match by winning the second set 25-19 and then dominated the third set 25-12.

The Boxers opened the fourth set on a 9-0 run and held on for a 25-20 win to force a fifth set. Pacific again started strong in the deciding set, racing out to an 8-2 advantage on its way to a 15-9 victory.

Freshman Isabelle Darnell led the Pacific attack with 13 kills to go along with five blocks. Freshman Makenna Ennes recorded a career-high six blocks. Senior McKenzie Uyehara posted four aces and 15 digs. Freshman Kira Fujimoto had a career-best 16 digs. Sophomore Callie Turner finished with 20 assists and 14 digs.

Pomona-Pitzer 3, Pacific 2

After dropping the first two sets and trailing 4-12 in the third, Pacific stormed back to force a deciding fifth set. But the Boxers attempt at a reverse sweep came up just short Friday afternoon with Pomona-Pitzer defeating Pacific 15-10.

Darnell recorded a career-high 18 kills. Turner finished with five aces, 18 assists and 14 digs.
