Boxers rally but fall short to Hamline

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Pacific volleyball team rallied to force a fifth set Saturday night against Hamline. 
 
But the young Boxers could not take home their first win of the season, falling 3-2 in the final match of the Oregon Trail Classic.
 
Pacific led 23-21 in the opening set, but couldn't finish as the Pipers closed on a 4-0 run to win 25-23. The second set wasn't as competitive as Hamline never trailed on the way to a 25-16 victory.
 
Behind 12-14 in the third set, the Boxers outscored Hamline 13-2 to stay alive in the match. Senior Emma Velchek, who finished with 19 kills and 19 digs, recorded nine kills in the third set alone to lead Pacific to victory.
 
Down 23-24 in the fourth set and facing match point, the Boxers scored three straight points on two more kills by Velchek, sandwiched between an ace by Kayla-Jane Padayao, to force the fifth set. Padayao led the Boxers with four aces to go along with 13 assists. 
 
After quickly falling behind 0-5 in the deciding fifth set, Pacific rallied to take a 10-8 lead. But tied 12-12, Hamline closed the match on a 3-0 run. 
 
Pacific freshman Makenna Ennes posted four blocks. Sophomore Callie Turner had 22 assists. Senior McKenzie Uyehara recorded 16 digs.

The Boxers opened the Oregon Trail Classic Saturday morning with a 18-25, 18-25, 22-25 loss to Azusa Pacific.
 
Velchek finished with 10 kills, five blocks and eight digs in the loss. 
 
Turner recorded 16 assists. Freshman Kira Fujimoto posted 14 digs. 
 
Next: Pacific travels to California to take on Pomona-Pitzer Friday at 3:15 p.m.
