Beth Whittle will begin her fourth season as the head men's and women's swimming coach at Pacific University in the fall of 2022.
In her first season as the head coach of the Boxer swim team in 2018-2019, Whittle coached the team to over 93% lifetime best times at the 2019 Northwest Conference Championships and guided a freshman swimmer to a new school record in the 200 backstroke. Her second season saw the team post over 90% lifetime best times at the 2020 NWC Championships and a freshman swimmer set two school records. Since Coach Whittle took over the program, the team roster has grown from 15 to 25 in two short years.Â
The College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) awarded both the men's and women's teams Scholar All-American Academic Honors the past two years (2018-19 & 2019-20). While one men's swimmer has earned All-NWC under Whittle and 18 athletes have been named NWC scholar-athlete's.Â
Before coming to Pacific, Whittle spent nearly eight years (2010-2018) as the head men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. At Macalester, Whittle led the team to 17 school records as a head coach, a women's team that competed in three NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships and a finish as high as 19th in the nation. Also while at Macalester, she worked as an athletics-admissions coordinator, coached the Macalester Masters swim team and taught courses in the PE department. Â
Prior to Macalester, Whittle served as an assistant coach at one of the top NCAA Division III programs at Washington University in St. Louis for four years (2005-09). During her tenure, she assisted in coaching the programs first three National Champions, while the women were in the top 15 all four years and men were in the top 18. Twice, the coaching staff was recognized as the conference Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.
Whittle also has NCAA Division I experience, as she served as an assistant coach at the University of Washington in Seattle. In her two years with the Huskies, she designed and implemented training plans, created and conducted workouts primarily for middle distance (IM, breast, fly, back) swimmers. She was also involved in the recruiting, academic progress, fundraising and community engagement activities. She helped coach multiple DI NCAA qualifiers during her time at Washington.Â
She also was an assistant coach at the University of South (Sewanee) from 2001-2003 coaching both the men and women.Â
As an athlete, Whittle competed in the NWC as part of the swim team at Linfield College; she was four-year letterwinner, team captain and went on to be inducted into the Athletic Department Hall of Fame in 2011. In 1996 she won the NAIA National Champion in the 200-yard backstroke, she was a 20-time All-American and winner of 11 Northwest Conference titles during her career. Whittle was named the Northwest Conference Female Swimmer of the Year in 1995 and co-winner in 1997.
Whittle earned her bachelor's degree from Linfield University and went on to earn her master's degree in PE/Athletic Administration from Idaho State University. She is a current member of the College Swim Coaches Association.Â
