Tim Hill enters his 12th year as Pacific head coach having re-built the Boxers’ softball program into a formidable competitor at the conference, regional and national levels.
Hill enters the season having led the Boxers to seven winning seasons with 20 or more wins, while the Boxers have shown continuous offensive improvement during that span.
The Boxers made their first appearance in the Northwest Conference tournament in 2013 since the tournament was put in place in 2011. The Boxers finished the season tied for third place with Whitworth with a 21-19 record and 16-12 record in the Northwest Conference. Overall, the Boxers hit .304 on the season with 57 doubles, 12 triples, and 24 homeruns. The Boxers started the conference season off by beating the No. 1 team in the country Pacific Lutheran when Ashley Mitchell hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game. Hill coached three First Team All-NWC selections and four second team selections. Becca Moen and Marissa Reichard also were tabbed for NFCA All-Region honors.
In 2011, Hill led the Boxers to a 22-18 record overall with a fifth place finish in the Northwest Conference (12-16). The Boxers set a team record for batting average (.348) and ranked among the conference leaders in several offensive categories. Ranking second in the conference and 28th nationally in batting average, the Boxers also rated in the top 30 Division III schools in home runs (0.85 per game) and slugging percentage (.510). Six Boxers were selected to the All-NWC teams, led by First Team honorees Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen and Chelsey Chamberlain. Vanoudenhaegen, a senior, was one of the nation’s top base stealers (0.95 per game), while Chamberlain slugged her way to a top ten national ranking in home runs (13) and RBI (1.58 per game). Each was selected All-West Region, with Vanoudenhaegen, now a member of the coaching staff, named to the First Team and Chamberlain honored with a Second Team selection.
In 2010, Hill led the Boxers to a 23-17 record overall and an 18-10 record and third place in the Northwest Conference. Nine of his players were named to All-Northwest Conference teams and Chelsey Chamberlain and Jessie Garcia were NFCA All-West Region At-Large Third Team selections. Through his tenure at Pacific Hill’s teams have shown continuous growth in their offensive attack. In 2010, Pacific ranked among the top-50 NCAA Division III schools in four categories, including fourth in home runs per game (1.1), 13th in slugging percentage (0.523), 23rd in batting average (0.340) and 28th in runs per game (6.65).
In 2009, the Boxers were 28-12 and finished third in the Northwest Conference with a record of 19-9. Nine players were selected to All-Northwest Conference teams and Kristen Croxford and Chelsey Chamberlain were NFCA All-West Region Team selections.
In 2008, Hill led a talented blend of veterans and newcomers into one of the most successful teams in the history of the program. The Boxers finished with a 31-9, coming one short of the school record for victories. Pacific finished second in the conference to then-defending national champion Linfield with a 20-8 mark, the best finish for a Boxers’ softball squad since 1998, and remained in contention for a NCAA Division III playoff berth until the season’s final weekend. Hill saw 10 of his players named to the All-Northwest Conference Team, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the entire roster.
A year earlier, Hill led the 2007 Boxers through a season of adversity to their best campaign in a decade. Despite not playing a home game due to construction of their new facility at Lincoln Park, Pacific posted a 25-13 record, which included a 14-game win streak and a run of 24 wins in 26 games.
During his eight-year tenure with Pacific, Hill has had over 50 players named to All-Northwest Conference teams, including 15 first team picks. Since arriving at Pacific, Hill has seen the Boxers improve by 21 wins over 2002. His teams have won 20 more games six of his eight seasons and finished with 15 or more conference victories five times. He collected his 200th collegiate coaching win on April 11, 2010 in a 7-2 win over Pacific Lutheran.
Hill came to Pacific in the summer of 2002 after two seasons at rival George Fox University. He is credited with turning around the Bruin softball program despite a limited number of players. Hill amassed a 25-31-2 record in his two seasons, including a 16-14-2 record and a fourth place NWC finish in 2001. The improvement netted Hill the conference's Coach of the Year honor.
In addition to Hill’s ten years of college coaching experience, he has over 25 years of success as a coach at the club level. Hill coached seven of his Amateur Softball Association (ASA) teams to Oregon state championships and guided 14 teams to the ASA National Tournament.
Hill retired in 2004 as the head coach of the highly successful Oregon Sun Supply ASA team. In his 25 years with the program, Hill led Sun Supply to a 1029-326 record. In 2002, Sun Supply captured the U-16 national championship with an 8-0 record at the ASA National Tournament. Sun Supply also garnered a fifth place national finish in 1995 and third place finishes in 1997 and 2001.
In 2005, Hill and Pacific softball assistant coach Paul Sabah were inducted into the Oregon Chapter of the American Softball Association Hall of Fame in recognition of their work with the Sun Supply program. He is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association and the Oregon State Softball Association.
Hill is a graduate of Portland State with a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. He retired in 2000 after a 30-year career with Willamette Industries. He lives in Beaverton with his wife of 38 years, Elaine, and has two grown children and two grandchildren.
