A well-established club coach in the Portland area, Sarah Ansboury is now in her second year in the college ranks as Pacific’s head women’s tennis coach.
Ansboury replaced Sandy Garry, who resigned in July 2010 after five years as head coach. It was Garry’s work leading and building the program that Ansboury says led her to the Pacific position.
“She has me really excited,” Ansboury said. “This team really wants to learn and be better and they can only get better. I am really anxious and excited to get this started. There is so much room for growth and so many possibilities.”
Ansboury comes to Pacific after six years as the head tennis professional at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash. Ansboury was in charge of developing junior and adult programs for a large group of players. She provided much of the on-court instruction for the program as well as organizing and supervising local and regional-level tournaments. She also directs the club’s Elite Junior Academy, which develops junior players with goals of competing at the college level.
Prior to her work at Club Green Meadows, Ansboury spent four years a teaching assistant at Portland’s Eastmoreland Racquet Club. She has also spent seven years as a traveling coach for the Billie Jean King World Team Tennis Junior Nationals program.
In addition to coaching, Ansboury has established herself as a high caliber adult player. She finished the 2009 season as part of the No. 2 ranked women’s doubles team in the United States Tennis Association’s Pacific Northwest Region.
A native of Portland, Ansboury played her prep tennis at Lake Oswego’s Lakeridge High School. In 2000 she teamed with Lillian Dunlap to win the state 4A doubles champion, completing a string of four straight doubles champs from the school. The 2000 Lakeridge team was also crowned the state team champion.
Ansboury went on to study psychology at Portland State University. She is a USPTA certified coach, with emphasis on continuing education in junior development, adult education and sports psychology.
