An experienced and successful high school volleyball coach, Ben Stern enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Pacific volleyball program in 2016.
Stern came to Pacific after three seasons as the head volleyball coach at Tualatin High School. A two-time Pacific Conference Coach of the Year selection (2010 and 2011), he led the Timberwolves to three straight OSAA 6A playoff appearances.
In addition, Stern is the head coach with the Athena Volleyball Club, directed by former Pacific head coach Lena Chan. In that role, Stern has directed various age-group teams as well as working to develop and run junior camps and skills clinics.
Prior to coming to the Northwest, Stern spent five seasons (2004 to 2009) coaching at Petaluma High School in Petaluma, Calif. The head coach of the program in his final two years, Stern led Petaluma to the CIF NorCal North Coast sectional championship in 2009. Stern also coached for five seasons with the Empire Volleyball Club and one season (2008) as a volunteer assistant women’s coach at NCAA Division II Sonoma State.
A native of San Diego, Stern graduated from Sonoma State in 2009 with a degree in teaching and earned his master’s degree from Pacific University in 2012. His wife, the former Melissa Dunn, was a four-year starting volleyball player at Pacific from 2005 to 2008 and is also an assistant coach with the program. His father-in-law, Mark Dunn, was an assistant coach for the Boxers in 2012.
Ben and Melissa are the proud parents of a baby girl born in July of 2015, Dinah.
