NEWBERG, Ore. – Pacific enjoyed the chance to hone their racing skills while participating in a rare collegiate dual meet Sautrday as the Boxers took on George Fox in a cross country meet at Champoeg State Park.
The Pacific women placed four runners in the top-six to collect the victory, scoring 26 points over the Bruins' 29 points.
Rachel Schreiber (Fr., Longmont, Colo.) led the way in the race, placing third with a time of 19:35. The effort moved the freshman into the No. 11 spot on Pacific's all-time list at the 5,000 meter distance, leading one of five Pacific women to enter or improve their times.
Jerry Sanchez (Jr., Mecca, Calif.) led a slid Pacific men's effort as he covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:00 to place second. The Boxers, however, fell to the Bruins by just one point, 28-29.
“This was a fun race today for both our men and women,” said Pacific Head Coach Tim Boyce. “We had nice efforts by both groups after a quality month of training.”
Jilinda Franklin (Jr., Fort Jones, Calif.) finished fourth in the women's race. Her time of 19:41 improved her top-25 time by one second.
Caitlyn Reilley (Fr., Reedsport, Ore.) finished fifth and her time of 19:52 is good enough for 20th on the all-time list.
Ally Shackelford (So., Portland, Ore.) moved to No. 21 on the list with a sixth place time of 19:53 while
Kiersten Iwai (So., San Diego, Calif.) moved up to No. 23 on the list with her eighth place time of 20:07.
John Cushman (Sr., Lakewood, Wash.) placed third for the Pacific men, finishing one second behind Sanchez with a time of 16:01.
Joe Deardorff (Jr., Independence, Ore.) finished fifth in a time of 16:17,
Dan Flora (Jr., North Bend, Ore.) was seventh in 16:25 and
Wes Porter (Jr., Elk Grove, Calif.) finished 12th in a time of 16:48.
Pacific will have a week off from competition before hosting their first home meet in recent years. The Boxers will hold the Boxer Rebellion meet on Sat., Oct. 15, at the Sunset Grove Golf Course, north of Forest Grove.
