DES MOINES, Wash. – Pacific used strength in the upper weight classes to gain a split in a pair of matches against Southwestern Oregon CC and Highline CC Sunday at Highline's Pavilion.

The Boxers opened the day with a 25-22 win over Southwestern Oregon CC, coming back from a 16-9 deficit with wins in three of the final five matches.  The Boxers could not dig out of a 17-3 hole amassed in the first five bouts against Highline, dropping the eventual 20-16 decision.

Caleb Malychewski (Sr., Camas, Wash.) led the way with bonus points in both matches.  The 184-pounder scored a first round pin over Southwestern Oregon CC's Trevor Davis and followed that up with an 18-5 major decision over Highline CC's Anton Yates to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Eric Harder (Jr., Bethesda, Md.), Bruce Balcita (Sr., Myrtle Creek, Ore.) and Chris Harlin (Sr., Issaquah, Wash.) were also two-match winners.  Harder improved to a team-best 11-2 on the season, Balcita improved to 7-5 and Harlin raised his record to 6-5.

In their opener, Pacific found themselves down 16-9 to the Lakers despite a technical fall from Harder in the 133-pound match and a 9-3 decision by Ryan Baxter (Jr., Craig, Alaska) in the 149-pound bout.  Balcita scored critical bonus points at 165 pounds with his 10-2 major decision over Andrew Orr.

Chris Newport put Pacific's backs to the wall as his 9-8 decision over Michael Tyner (Jr., Aloha, Ore.) gave the Lakers a 19-13 lead.  Malychewski made the deficit up in all of 75 seconds with his pin of Davis in the next match.  Harlin accepted a forfeit at 197 pounds to secure the win before Aaron Beadle (Fr., Hillsboro, Ore.) gave up a hard fought 3-1 overtime decision at heavyweight to Caleb Green.

Highline won four of the first five matches in the Boxers' nightcap, leaving the upper weights with a lot of work to do.  Andres Teresa put five on the board right away with his technical fall at 125 pounds.  Harder countered with an 11-4 decision over Alex Herrera at 133 pounds before the Thunderbirds scored victories in the next three matches, including a forfeit at 141 pounds.  The wins allowed Highline the 17-3 advantage.

Pacific won four of the final five matches, but could not get the bonus points needed to swing the final score back the Boxers' way.    Balcita was a 10-3 winner over Gore at 165 pounds, while Malychewski scored the only bonus points with his 18-5 major decision over Yates.  Harlin came through with an 8-6 decision over Tyler Cormier while Beadle ground out a 2-1 decision over Edwin Torres.

Pacific will now turn its focus to Division III competition for the first time this season.  The Boxers will compete at the Wartburg Desert Duals on Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev., with matches against Delaware Valley, Heidelberg, Concordia (Neb.) and St. John's (Minn.).
