FOREST GROVE, Ore. — There are 90 minutes in a soccer match and obviously every tic of the clock counts.
But in a women's soccer match on Wednesday night under the lights at Hanson Stadium, it was the first minute of the game that mattered most as Pacific captured a 1-0 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference battle.
McKenna Davidson's blast of a loose ball 55 seconds into the match would turn out to be the only score of the night as the Boxers picked up their third league win of the season (3-5-1) and improved to 3-9-1 overall. The Bruins dropped to 3-8-2 on the year and to 1-7-1 in Northwest Conference action.
The Boxers would have only two shots on goal the rest of the night and the Bruins would have just one that needed to be saved.
For Davidson, it was her second goal of the season.
Kailey Hifumi got the start in the net and picked up her second shutout of the year.
We are always happy to earn a shutout at home, which was truly a team effort," said head coach Morgan Joseph. The victory snapped a two-match skid for the Boxers and was the sixth straight loss for the Bruins.
"I was particularly impressed with our work in the attack tonight," Joseph added. "We were able to string together passes, exhibit patience, and exploit spaces out wide to keep them on their back foot. McKenna (Davidson), Emily (Thompson), and Kathleen (McIntyre) were particularly effective tonight in that regard.
Although a solid performance, we will continue to identify the parts of our game that we can improve for our next match."
Pacific will remain home with a doubleheader this weekend, taking on Whitman on Saturday and Whitworth on Sunday. Both matches start at noon.
