Early goal holds up for Pirates

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Whitworth's Tiara Pajimola scored what would turn out to be the only goal of the match less than 12 minutes in as the visiting Pirates edged Pacific 1-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Hanson Stadium.

Pajimola scored off a pass from Hannah Bokma and then the Pirate defense kept the Boxers out of the goal for the entire 90 minutes as Whitworth improved to 4-6-1 in conference play and to 6-8-1 overall. Pacific, who battled  to a 0-0 overtime tie against Whitman yesterday, falls to 3-6-2 in the NWC and to 3-10-2 on the year.

Pacific actually outshot Whitworth 13-4 and 5-4 in shots on goal. The home team had seven corner kicks to the Pirates' four. But Pirate goalkeeper Andrea Stump guarded the net to perfection in notching the shutout. The Boxers had some solid attempts late in the match, including a near Olimpico by Lucy Almao in the final minutes.

Kailey Hifumi had two saves for Pacific and gave up just the one goal.

With the win, Whitworth remained one slot (two points) ahead of Pacific in the NWC standings.

Next up for Pacific is a road match at No. 24 Puget Sound next Saturday (Oct. 24) at noon, followed by a home match versus Lewis & Clark on Sunday (noon).
