McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Linfield's Rachael Gernhart scored twice to reverse a Pacific lead and help lead her Wildcats to a 2-1 women's soccer win on Sunday afternoon.
Gernhart scored in the 29th minute and then again early in the second half (51:27) to give the Wildcats the comeback points at the Linfield Soccer Field. The victory means the Wildcats improved to 9-5-3 on the season and to 6-5-3 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific drops to 3-9-2 in the NWC and to 3-13-2 overall.
The Boxers stunned the home crowd just 30 seconds into the match when
McKenna Davidson dribbled down the right side and aimed a cross into the net. It sailed past Wildcat goalkeeper Sarah Bailey for Davidson's third goal of the season.
But Bailey and her defense would keep the Boxers out of the goal the rest of the afternoon--including with two and a half minutes left when Pacific had three good shots at Bailey in a wild exchange. Successive shots by
Emily Thompson and Holli Chang-Northway were blocked by Bailey but kept in play before the third shot sailed high, ending Pacific's late chance to send the match into overtime.
With the win, the Wildcats gained a measure of revenge after the Boxers won in double overtime in Forest Grove in early October (1-0).
Pacific had 10 shots in the game, six of them on goal. Linfield countered with 17 shots, nine on goal. Boxer goalie
Kailey Hifumi had seven saves in the match.
Pacific will look to get back on track with its final two home matches of the year next weekend. The Boxers will take on Willamette on Friday night at Hanson Stadium (7 p.m.) and will wrap up the 2015 season on Sunday at noon versus Pacific Lutheran.
