Bearcats' two early goals clip Boxers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Veronica Ewers scored twice in the first 16 minutes of the match and her Willamette teammates made those points stand up as the visiting Bearcats defeated Pacific in a women's soccer match on Friday night at Hanson Stadium, 2-1.

The Bearcats improved to 9-8-2 with the win and are now 9-6-1 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific dropped to 3-14-2 on the year and to 3-10-2 in league action.

Ewers scored her second and third goals of the season at the 3:52 and 15:35 marks to give the Bearcats a quick 2-0 lead. Her first goal was on a header off a corner kick and the second was a 25 yard blast from the left side.

Yet Pacific answered just 14 seconds later on a set piece. Emily Thompson took a corner kick from Brook Smith and headed it into the net to pull the home team to within a goal. For the freshman Thompson, it was her second goal of the year.

But neither team was able to find the net again. The Bearcats had 15 shots in the match but only four were on goal, while Pacific had six shots, three of them on goal. Both goalkeepers--Emily Sewell for the Bearcats, and Kailey Hifumi for Pacific, had two saves each.

Pacific will wrap the 2015 season on Sunday at noon, hosting Pacific Lutheran. Senior Day festivities for Pacific's seven graduating seniors will begin at 11:45 a.m.
